5 Hacks to Overcome Fear of Social Media Videos

Video content is widely recognized as one of the most powerful tools for growing and maintaining a successful real estate business today. And, while recording a video of yourself may sound like an easy, quick task, many find it can be very daunting to have to actually sit down and face the camera. Women especially are more prone to have cultural and societal expectations that can turn a simple reel-making process into an anxiety-inducing panic attack!

In this blog, we have listed five proven hacks to overcome the fear of creating those dreaded social media videos for your business.

Pick the Right Timing

It is always a good time to press the record button when you are on your A-game and in the zone. Perhaps you are well-rested, or got an offer accepted, or just completed a final walkthrough – these are all great times to shoot your video. It’s true; when you are in a positive mindset, it will be easier to convey your message in a more polished overall presentation.  Do not force yourself. Instead, show your true self and let the content flow organically.

Know Your Message

Before you start recording, visualize how the end product should look and sound. Practice your message a few times so that it’s easier to be relaxed and focus with your intended audience.  You should not have to worry about memorizing lines or sticking to a script —, just act as if you are talking to your clients about a subject you know well. Of course, you will want to have some preparation beforehand, but not so much that it sounds unnatural. Too much rehearsing may actually have a counter effect and could cause you to feel overwhelmed. Instead, focus on getting comfortable enough with your content so you sound natural and relaxed.

Consider Style & Delivery

While speaking on camera, maintain good posture and use gestures or facial expressions as appropriate – these nonverbal cues can supplement your verbal message and bring energy to a video. Be mindful of your body language and speak with confidence. If confidence is hard to find, consider a different subject matter you know so well that confidence comes naturally. Additionally, when editing afterwards, don’t cut out all of your pauses or breaks, as it makes for a more organic, authentic video.

Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

It can be easy to fall into the trap of comparing your own performance or end product to those of others. However, this habit can have a negative effect on your own self-assurance and make it harder for you to produce a quality video. The social media world is ripe with agents who have mastered video production or have teams on staff to produce their content. If you are new to video or do not have the budget to hire a film crew, no worries! Your audience wants to know who YOU are – not the latest stars of HGTV. Remember, comparing yourself to others will only distract you and limit your potential for creativity and innovation.

Outsource Everything Post-Production

Editing and posting is one of the hardest and most time consuming efforts of video production.  It is much easier, and more cost effective, to hire an editor who knows what they are doing to make your end product look polished and professional rather than struggling and wasting time on work you are not completely satisfied with. This also goes for all social media work such as posting your reel, writing content, and creating hashtags.

After you post, don’t forget to gather feedback from peers or viewers in order to make improvements on future productions.  Not only will this help ensure that each iteration is even better than before, but it also reinforces self-confidence in your abilities as a content creator.

Overall, although some fear may be inevitable when creating videos, try not to let it overwhelm you or negatively impact your faith in yourself as an incredibly knowledgeable agent. Use every opportunity as a learning experience and focus on producing content that is true to you, speaks to your audience, and conveys its intended message effectively!
